PARKS DETERIORATING UNDER B.C. LIBERALS, REPORT SHOWS

VICTORIA— An explosive new report from B.C.’s Auditor General shows that the B.C. Liberal government is failing to protect the provinces parks, say New Democrats.

“This report shows how the B.C. Liberal government is failing to protect B.C.'s treasured Class A parks and ecological reserves,” said New Democrat environment critic Rob Fleming. “This is just one more glaring example of the B.C. Liberal government’s environmental hypocrisy.”

The Auditor General’s report set out to answer three key questions about the government’s commitment to conserving ecological integrity in the park system. These questions were:

    1.     Does the ministry have a vision, plans and operational policies for conserving ecological integrity in the parks and protected areas system?

    2.     Is the ministry ensuring that ecological integrity is being conserved in the province’s Class A parks and ecological reserves?

    3.     Is the ministry reporting on the state of ecological integrity within the parks and protected areas system?

In every case the Auditor General’s answer was a resounding ‘no,’ noted Fleming.

ENBRIDGE SPILL SHOWS TARSANDS PIPELINE WOULD PUT B.C. AT RISK

VICTORIA— News that a pipeline operated by Enbridge has spilled more than three million litres of oil into a Michigan river has left British Columbians deeply concerned about the company’s plan to run a twinned pipeline from the Alberta tarsands to the port of Kitimat, say New Democrats.

The proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline would cross more than 1000 streams and rivers, including the headwaters of the Fraser and the Skeena rivers.

“It’s time for the B.C. Liberals to explain why they continue to support a project that has the potential to threaten some of our most significant waterways, including the Skeena and the Fraser River,” said New Democrat environment critic Rob Fleming.

“The major risks posed by both the pipeline and the hundreds of crude oil supertankers that would carry tarsands crude from our coast far outweigh any short-term benefits to the region and our province as a whole.”

The three million litre spill originated in Talmadge Creek, a small waterway located in the state of Michigan. Enbridge’s slow response to the spill meant the oil was left to cascade down the creek for hours until it entered the Kalamazoo River, which empties into Lake Michigan.

“This latest Enbridge spill is a reminder that all the promises in the world from big oil companies can’t protect our rivers and coastlines if the B.C. Liberals let this pipeline go forward,” said Gary Coons, the New Democrat MLA for the North Coast. “Instead of listening to British Columbians, who have said loud and clear that they are not willing to take this risk, the B.C. Liberals are pandering to one of their major campaign donors.”

NEW DEMOCRATS HOST OIL & WATER COMMUNITY FORUM

VICTORIA- In response to overwhelming public concern about the threat posed to BC’s coast by offshore oil exploration and coastal tanker traffic, NDP MP Denise Savoie (Victoria) and NDP MLA Rob Fleming (Victoria-Swan Lake) will hold a public forum in Victoria on Tuesday, June 29th.

“We are witnessing the weakening of government policies for environmental protection at the very time when the public is looking for reassurance that our coasts will be protected,” said Savoie.

As part of the Budget Bill just passed with Liberal support, the Conservative government gutted environmental assessments and passed-off regulation of big oil and gas to the industry-friendly National Energy Board. The BC Liberal government has also cut provincial environmental assessment and continues to push for oil and gas exploration off BC’s coast.

Gulf Oil spill disaster should be an environmental wake-up for B.C.

Statement on World Oceans Day – June 8, 2010

By Rob Fleming, MLA Victoria-Swan Lake and Official Opposition Environment Critic

June 8 is World Oceans Day -  an important day to reflect on the health of our marine ecosystems and their protection.

The sinking of the BP Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig has created an unabated environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Now the worst U.S. oil spill in history, the event is a stark warning to British Columbians about the risks of drilling oil off our coastline.

Unfortunately, the B.C. Liberals are either unable or unwilling to acknowledge the importance of this catastrophe and its devastation of the fishery and marine ecosystems of our southern neighbours.

NEW DEMOCRATS INTRODUCE BILL TO PROTECT B.C.'S ENDANGERED SPECIES

VICTORIA— New Democrat environment critic Rob Fleming is hoping for bi-partisan support for the Species at Risk Protection Act – which would protect British Columbia’s endangered species and their habitat.

“It’s shameful that British Columbia is one of only two provinces in Canada without legislation to protect endangered species and their habitat,” said Fleming. “Given the fact that habitat loss is the single greatest cause of extinction - I hope all members of the legislature can come together to support this bill and protect our province’s most vulnerable species.”

B.C. Liberals take one-off approach with no plan to protect B.C. rivers

VICTORIA – New Democrats are pleased that the B.C. Liberals have promised to shelve a private power project that threatened to devastate a huge swath of wilderness on B.C.’s mid-coast.

Under questioning in the legislature on Wednesday by New Democrat MLA for North Island Claire Trevena, Environment Minister Barry Penner promised not to allow the Klinaklini River private power project go ahead.
